Today, I went through the description of a patent pending android application which does the backup of contacts. The name of application is Z1 contacts backup and restore. I installed and checked if the backup and restore functions are working. It is working fine.
This apppication makes an extra folder in your Gmail account and backs up entire contacts to that folder. Automatic backups will be done once a new contact is created in your phone. If your phone is not connected to internet, contacts will be backed up to sd card(external memory). Backups can be done manually too. IMAP should be enabled in your Gmail account for the backup to work.
Pros: Automatic backup, Fast backup, Can access contacts anywhere from your Gmail account.
Cons: Backups are not performed immediately after creating a contact, Backup cannot be scheduled.
